Dusky Sound

For the more energetic, Manapouri also serves as a base for the challenging but uncrowded walk to Dusky Sound (10 days). The Dusky Track offers trampers an insight into the more remote reaches of Fiordland National Park as it threads its way through wild, rain-drenched forests and over alpine passes to reach isolated Supper Cove Hut on Dusky Sound. Because of the very rough nature of the terrain, this track is only suitable for experienced parties but it can be shortened to 4 or 5 days by flying in or out of Dusky Sound.

Instead of starting at Manapouri it is also possible to start from Lake Hauroko further south. Both variations of the tramp can be linked for a trip taking from 8 to 10 days.
