Upon entering Hanalei, notice the lazy river meanders through taro patches, green leaves glimmering like emeralds framed by moss-colored mountains and deep, blue sky. Here the 917-acre Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge has been established to protect endangered and other birds. And here, at the gateway to the Hanalei Valley, is a one-way truss bridge originally constructed in 1912, the first of many one-way bridges that lie in the path of the winding highway that leads through Hanalei Town to the end of the road.

The historic Hanalei Pier was built in 1892 and has long been a favorite gathering place for local residents who go there to fish, swim, play music and discuss the events of the day. But it was not until 1957 when Oscar Hammerstein II and 20th Century Fox settled on Kaua`i as the location for the classic film, “South Pacific,” that the pier came to fame. The pier was featured in the film along with other memorable North Shore locations like Lumahai Beach and Mount Makana, renamed Bali Hai in the movie.
