Montezuma
The former fishing village bearing the noble name of the Aztec’s last emperor now attracts backpackers, hippies and dropouts. East of Montezuma there are a number of beautiful white sand beaches: Playa Cocal, Playa Cocalito and Playa Quizales. The uncontrolled cutting of forests on the mountain slopes has resulted in water shortages for tourists and locals during the dry season. In addition to swimming and relaxing on the beaches, visitors can rent fishing boats, dive, snorkel or take organized tours on horseback.
A day trip to Isla Tortuga, a 320 hectare island 14 kilometers from the mainland, offers a change of scenery and crystal-clear water for snorkeling.
